Parents and kids can exercise at home, without even knowing it!  For parents, it would be a great thing to go to a gym three or more days a week, lift weights, and get in some serious calorie burning HIIT workouts to stay fit.  After all, who wouldn’t want to look and feel great, right? Playing with your kids

Having to stay at home during quarantine has given parents a lot of free time with their kids. And playing with your children actually burns a lot of calories.  Think of it as a fun way to get your daily exercise.  Roughhousing and carrying your younger children on your back burns about 230 calories per hour.  If you have a big enough yard for a bit of outdoor bonding, playing Frisbee for half an hour a day burns about 205 calories. Another way for parents and kids to exercise at home; vacuuming, dusting, cleaning the windows, changing the bed sheets, doing laundry – all these can help you burn around 150 calories.  And it can be a fun activity too – one that your kids can participate in. With a few adjustments to your movements, you can increase the intensity and burn more calories while tidying up your home. Take for example vacuuming or mopping the floors. You can do a full lunge when you move the mop forward or reach for the vacuum. This engages your abdominal muscles and uses the big muscles on your lower body. Also, you can stand on your toes when you scrub or dust shelves or surfaces over your head. You can try standing on one leg (and then switch to your other leg after a minute) while you wipe down kitchen or bathroom counters. Standing on one leg or on your toes shapes your lower leg by engaging your calf muscles. It also tightens your core because you’re keeping your balance.

Everybody knows that gardening and yard work is a good way to get some exercise.  But, not everyone knows that you actually can burn as much as 400 calories per hour when tending to your garden.  This is because you do a lot of movements that burn calories and can actually help tone muscles.  Depending on the type of yard work you do, you are most likely squatting – which is a form of isometric exercise, digging, lifting and walking around your garden.  So, family gardening is actually a great way for parents and kids to exercise at home. Of course the total calories burned will be different for everyone. Factors like metabolism, weight, age, gender and what kind of work you will do affects how many calories in total you burn. However, the best part of gardening is that if you really enjoy it, you are not watching the clock and before you know it, you have spent half a day getting a full body workout without the mental stress of going through an actual workout.  Plus, your garden will look great.

Washing the car

Yes – that unavoidable chore burns serious calories.  You need to pre-rinse, soap, scrub, rinse and wipe down the car which can burn a total of 234 calories per hour.  You can add to that by vacuuming the interior, scrubbing the tires, waxing and buffing.  The cleaner and shinier your car gets, the more calories you burn. So, the next time you are thinking of going for an automatic car wash service, think of the exercise opportunity you are missing out on.  Get your kids involved in washing the car – on a sunny day, hosing down the car and having fun is a great way to cool off and bond with the family.

Getting a massage

At the end of the day, after all the playing with your kids and washing the car and cleaning your house has been done – you are likely to feel achy and sore.  And, with that amount of ‘workout’ done, getting a massage is a great way to relax.  Problem is, you can’t exactly book a spa appointment right now. With the current social distancing protocols in place, the second best option is to DIY your massage sessions. Athletes train as hard as they can to perform at their best on game day. However, when they leave the training ground and go home, the job is often just beginning for the coaching team. Data from on field and training sessions is constantly monitored to help assess player performance. Heart rate,  distance travelled, top speeds, involvement in play, and the outcomes of involvements, are among many other inputs, are all tracked and recorded.

Maths is Important in Sport

Coaches can spend hours poring over the data taken from these sessions. A strong grounding in mathematics from both players and coaches can significantly help in understanding how best to apply the findings. Interestingly, this data is useful from school sport right through to the professional level. Particularly in making sure players and teams don’t get burnt out and perform at their best when it really matters. Mathematics and data analysis are playing a major role in modern sports. So, children wishing to pursue a career in sport can’t ignore maths.

Many teams around the world have mathematicians working for them full time. At the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, both New Zealand and Australian teams had a group of full-time mathematicians. This team helped prepare, strategise and debrief all of the athletes involved. Many professional teams now look to hire top-level graduates straight from university and embed them into their performance analysis departments. This has come as a result of teams looking to gain an edge wherever they can over their opposition. Often times data analysis is providing the difference.

What life skills would you like your child to gain? A life skill is a set of skills someone needs to deal with the challenges of life. For each person, their set of life skills is different. How someone acquires life skills is dependant upon their experiences and activities he or she engaged in throughout life. One activity that teaches many essential life skills is sports activities. Having your child participate in sports, may make teaching life skills to your child easier to prepare them for adulthood.

Life Skills Learned Through Sports Activities

Commitment

All sports activities take a certain amount of dedication to stay involved in. Commitment is something that comes from within. While you can drive your child to practices, ultimately it is your child who will strive to not only participate in the sport but also get better at it. This life skill is essential for all aspects of adult life including relationships, college, and work.

Communication

What sports activities lack in written communication, they make up for in verbal communication. Communication as a whole is a multifaceted life skill. It involves communication of verbal and nonverbal cues between one or more people. For children who participate in sports activities like soccer, football, and more with multiple players on a field, children will experience multiple forms of communication like: 

  • A soccer player shouting a name to pass a ball to another player 
  • A coach shouting encouraging words from the bench to give players positive reinforcement 
  • Players and coaches coming together in a huddle to explain a game plan or strategy

These are all examples of common verbal communication. Nonverbal communication is displayed when a player on the field nods his/her head, points, or gives a thumbs up to a player or coach to signal a ball handoff or convey understanding. Play, games and sports have many benefits and teach kids important life skills.

Decision making

Decision making is a regular part of daily life. According to Psychology Today, the average number of decisions an adult makes daily is an astounding 35,000! Making that many decisions as an adult takes practice starting at a young age. Thankfully, sports activities can help your child develop this life skill to be able to make thousands of decisions a day. In a sport, children have to make quick decisions. A batter in the MLB has just 150 milliseconds to react to a 95-mile-an-hour fastball. While your child won’t be batting against 95-mile-an-hour fastballs, those quick reactions as an adult start first in youth sports activities. 

Teamwork

Any sport involves a certain degree of teamwork. Sports like swimming, bowling, track, and more rely heavily on individual performance. But an individual’s performance still contributes to a team’s overall performance against other teams. For a team to come together and perform well, a great amount of camaraderie needs to exist between teammates.  This life skill learned through sports activities can help children in childhood to interact with their peers at school and siblings at home. But teamwork also becomes essential when entering the workforce because teamwork helps increase business efficiency while equally distributing the workload among employees.

Handling Criticism

No one goes through life doing everything perfectly. We’re all human and humans make mistakes. Therefore, there’s always room for improvement in every area of life. Children in sports will experience both failures and successes when it comes to both their skills and their team’s performance.  Constructive criticism occurs frequently in sports. This type of criticism tells a child what improvements they need to make to be better at his/her sport of choice while still giving the child positive reinforcement through praise. Being able to handle constructive criticism shows a child’s emotional maturity which can better prepare them for more criticism later in life.

Resilience

Resilience is the ability for someone to face tragedy, adversity, or loss and be able to come back emotionally strong again. In sports, there’s a winner and there’s a loser. It’s part of the game. But depending on how well your child bounces back from that loss says a lot about their resilience. This life skill is one that becomes better with time. Your child may take the first few losses hard. There may even be a few tears shed. But over time, your child will most likely develop resilience. After a loss, some children feel like quitting. However, if your child continues to return to practices and perfect his/her skill set, your child is building resilience. Sports activities provide a child with a healthy emotional and physical outlet. But sports also help a child develop many life skills they will need to face the world when they enter adulthood. While we as parents would all like to see our children win in sports all the time, sometimes the learning begins once a loss is experienced. The more your child participates in sports activities the more he/she will gain life skills to prepare him/her for adulthood.

Learning correct sporting conduct at a children’s sports camp can have great benefits for participants.  Positive attitudes and correct sporting conduct make sport more enjoyable for everyone.  As well as creating the best environment for learning and development.  However, some players can ruin the experience with poor behaviour. Examples of poor behaviours could include harassing others, poor sportsmanship, foul language, bullying, taunting, victimisation, undue pressure and more. Bad conduct in sport is generally the result of the limited reinforcement of strong sporting values from a young age. This lack of direction manifests throughout adolescence and can create a ‘grey area’ for what is acceptable on & off the sporting field or court. Encouraging your child to play sports, especially team sports, is a great way to teach them many important values that will help them in all areas of life! In addition, to allowing them grow into well balanced, respectful and productive adults. So, what can you do to help teach your kids good sporting conduct and sportsmanship? The first thing to do is to reinforce that sport is not all about winning! Of course, we always want to win at everything we do. However, most importantly, we want our kids to have fun, make friends, and stay fit and healthy! And, constantly reinforcing this ideology, by always praising their sporting efforts, rather than their sporting victories, will only create a positive association and love for sport.  This will assist your child in enjoying a lifetime of enthusiasm towards playing sport. So, in today’s article we’ll discuss further examples of correct sporting conduct in junior sports, and how these values are taught and reinforced at our ASC Sports Camps.

“Fair Play: Fair Go”

Our philosophy at ASC is that all kids & parents should participate in “Fair play, Fair go” when playing any sports. ASC’s Fair Play ideology is simply, “winning isn’t everything”.  If you must cheat to win, then it will be a shallow win. When playing sport, you should always play by the rules of the game and do everything you can to be the best player, within the rules of the game.  Also, this can apply to grey areas of the game where there may not be a specific rule.  However, comes back to being fair and honest. In junior sports, there will always be players of different abilities and size playing in the same teams.  Therefore, it’s important that every child gets a fair go with participation, having fun and developing their skills. Winning & Losing in Sports

Earlier in this article we’ve touched on the importance of enjoying sport.  It’s about fun and health. And, not solely based around winning and losing. However, winning and losing is obviously an integral aspect of competitive sports. So, the importance of learning how to win with humility, and lose gracefully is essential to building a strong positive sporting conduct philosophy. In sport, it’s important to try your hardest and we always want to strive to be the best we can be. However, it is inevitable that sometimes we’ll lose. When this happens don’t get angry or look to blame your teammates, the referee or coaches. Accept it with pride, congratulate the winners and look at areas that you can improve upon next time! The below quote is from 5-time NBA champion, Kobe Bryant, in 2018 about losing in sport.  It helps to demonstrate the importance of learning from defeat, rather than getting upset about it. “It’s exciting, (losing) because it means you have different ways to get better. There are certain things you can figure out, that you can take advantage of, certain weaknesses that were exposed that you need to shore up. So, it’s exciting. It sucks to lose but at the same time, there are answers there if you just look at them.” – Kobe Bryant A similar approach of humility should be taken when we win sporting contests too. To put it simply, no one likes a gloater. When you win it’s fine to celebrate with your teammates and family, but don’t rub the other teams nose in their defeat. Be respectful, always shake hands and congratulate them on a good game. Ultimately, we should treat others the way we’d also like to be treated. Whether it be on the side of a win or loss.  

Encouraging Teammates

Team sports work best when everyone supports the team. Encouraging your teammates to play their best and to get back up when they fall is what being a great teammate is all about!  So, it’s best to avoid criticism and unkind actions when a teammate makes a mistake. As this behaviour won’t help anyone. Instead, by praising what they do well and encouraging their efforts, you can boost your teammates self-esteem and confidence when they make mistakes! Also, we need to remember that nobody is perfect. And, that we’re not above making the occasional mistake ourselves either. Especially in junior sports, where feelings of embarrassment and shame can be heightened by negative behaviour after a mistake is made. So, it’s important to go over and encourage your teammate with a friendly pat on the back when they make a mistake. So, they can regain their confidence and focus on the next play! We encourage this behaviour at ASC camps through our coaches’ leadership during drills. So, participants are welcome to cheer and support each player during games and competitive drills. Usually with an incentive that the goals or points in a game won’t count unless the players are encouraging each other.  Which usually lays the groundwork for creating a fun atmosphere.  Where, the participants are naturally encouraging each other by the end of the 3-day camp. This is always so rewarding and fun to see amongst camp participants! And helps kids to create & strengthen friendships within groups.  Plus, it also helps them perform at their best, and provide an overall fun and rewarding experience for all partakers!

The world of sport is continually evolving.  And, the use of technology is just one aspect that’s had an enormous impact on the way we spectate, play and experience the modern sport. The advancements of technology use in the sport over the last 200 years have not only changed professional sport dramatically, but it has also impacted sports at the grassroots level. Junior netball might not have the action replays and GPS tracking technology that is used by the pros. However, the improvements made in electronic apps, clothing apparel and online information sources, are all examples of how technology is helping junior players in becoming the next generation of Australian Netballer’s!

Let’s discuss some examples of technology use in netball, and how it impacts the sport!

Technology Use In Netball

Netball Shoes

When we think of the word ‘technology’, our brains will usually imagine electronic advancements and its applications. However, the improvements made to clothing apparel in netball over the last century has been1900s netball uniform revolutionary from an invention standpoint! Did you know that in the early 1900’s netball players would wear everyday sand-shoes (flat-shoes) to play the game?! Just think of the impact that would have had on the players’ feet! The first ‘netball shoes’ were introduced during the 1960’s when the game of netball was moved to be played indoors. These shoes added an upper and white sole, like the picture shown. It wasn’t until the 1970’s that the design of netball shoes began to focus on injury prevention. The increasing popularity of the game of netball and shoe companies influenced the evolution of netball shoes. The intention was to better protect the players and increase their on-court playing performance.Netball 1960 shoes Netball is a high-impact sport that requires rapid acceleration and deceleration, sudden and sharp changes in direction, immediate stops, high-impact jumps and ongoing balance and stability. Because of this, netballer’s are at a high risk of injury.  Particularly to the knees, ankles and lower bodies. Today’s netball shoes are engineered with heel counters, gel layers and stability straps to help prevent these injuries to modern players.

So…How Does This Affect Junior Netball?

Although injuries are generally unavoidable in sport, younger players today have the freedom to play netball with the most advanced netball shoes in the history of the game. As mentioned above, the shoes are specifically designed to minimize the impact of stress upon the feet, knees and joints. YouTube, Facebook & Google

The number of internet users worldwide in 2019 is 4.388 billion, up 9.1% year-on-year! (Smart Insights 2019, para 4). The takeover of social media use and the reliability on search engines, like Google, have made information-sourcing the easiest and most diverse it has ever been in the worlds’ history! Think of the number of times you have searched things on google today. How often did you find exactly what you were looking for? Were you able to use the knowledge to better yourself? Perhaps it was a new recipe you’ve been wanting to try, or learn that the Sun is 149.6 million km from the Earth! (it is by the way!)YouTube, Facebook & Google New ideas and new information have never been easier to attain within the modern world! So, how could this technology affect junior netball? One prime example is the way we use sites such as YouTube, Google and Facebook when training or coaching, to find new ways to support our skills development. For example, when we want to practice shooting form, Google and YouTube provide not only visual aids on the topic but also offers a step-by-step tutorial on proper technique. Today’s Netball junior players have exclusive historical access to professional-level coaching and guidance, even when they are not practising with teammates or within a team environment! Players’ in the 1990’s didn’t even have anywhere near the same level of technological access to information at their disposal! And that is less than 30 years ago! This technological advancement assists modern junior players in not-only correcting weaker aspects of their skills, but further developing their strengths and providing direction for how they can reach their full potential!

Mobile Apps

In parallel with the advancements of the internet, are the technological improvements made to mobile apps. By logging in to your app store on your phone, you have access to numerous health and fitness apps! All to better your sporting development! Apps such as “NETFIT Netball”, “Sportplan”, and “MyNetball” are all examples of current popular apps that are available for free! These apps provide coaching videos, video library’s for technique improvement, and even nutrition plans!popular netball mobile apps For junior netballer’s, apps such as these can be very beneficial for skill development! These apps mirror the benefits of search engines, allowing you to have ready access to new information at your fingertips! However, mobile apps have the added benefit of being more personalised & readily available for use. “NETFIT Netball” for example, allows the user to create a user profile. This profile lets you store drills, videos and reading the material, to cater  specifically to you! This offers many benefits for junior players as they have instant access to a cost-effective, convenient and personalised information source! Not only do junior players have access to this information, but the coaches of junior netball teams do as well! The development of professional coaching plans can assist coaches in their delivery of structured and fun coaching programs! Which will hopefully provide junior players with positive playing experience, enhancing their enjoyment of the game, and enjoyment is always the main purpose of sport, win, lose or draw.

Read on to find out more for about bullying in youth sports.  As well as useful ideas and strategies to overcome this potentially harmful issue. In Australia, 1 in 4 students report incidences of bullying.  Unfortunately, many children won’t come forward about their experience for fear of making the bullying worse, meaning the actual number of children who experience bullying may be much higher than statistics indicate.  Bullying comes in many forms and is defined as repeated and intentional verbal, physical, social or psychological aggressive behaviour.  It intends to cause harm, distress and/or fear.  This behaviour can be directed toward a group, or at an individual, and may be perpetrated by one person or multiple.

The reasons for bullying in youth sport

Children may bully one another for numerous reasons.  A child may bully another for social acceptance, power or admiration from onlookers.  Also, a bully may have been bullied themselves previously or may have been influenced by aggressive role models, at home or on TV.  They may be lacking in empathy and not care about the distress they cause their victim or even see it as justified.  Any child may become a target of bullying.  In sports, many children who are bullied because their teammates see them as a competitive threat. Bullying has links to many negative outcomes for victims.  Including, impacts on mental health, physical health and academic results.  Kids who experience bullying are at a greater risk for developing depression and anxiety, which can manifest as changes in sleeping and eating patterns, sadness, feelings of isolation, and a reduced interest in the activities that they used to enjoy.  Children who experience serious, ongoing bullying may lose their self-esteem, engage in substance abuse and may even become suicidal.  These mental health problems can persist well into adulthood.   bullying in youth sport

What can you do if your child experiences bullying playing sport?

We often recommend kids join a team sport if they experience bullying at school.  As it gives them another support network.  But, what can you do if your child experiences bullying within that sport? In a sports context, bullying may take many forms, including:

  • Continuous put downs about an athlete’s abilities
  • Isolation
  • Intimidation
  • Verbal abuse from the sidelines
  • A group of players ganging up on a single player

The signs of bullying

Signs that might indicate that your child is experiencing bullying include:

  • They no longer want to participate in the sport they used to love
  • Avoiding seeing their friends, or one friend in particular
  • They complain of stomach aches or other ailments that prevent them from playing or training
  • Other behavioural changes

These signs do not necessarily mean that your child is being bullied, but may serve as a reminder to bring up a conversation with your child about bullying and their well-being.  After having this conversation, if your child denies being bullied but you are still concerned, perhaps you could ask another adult that they trust to talk to them.  This could be a teacher, older sibling, coach or another family member.  Your child may be afraid to tell you for fear of getting into trouble, making the bullying worse, or embarrassment. If your child opens up to you about being bullied, ensure you are supportive and listen to your child’s feelings without judgment or blame.  Don’t ask your child what they have done to incite the behaviour, and don’t minimise their concerns.

What coaches and clubs can do to prevent bullying

In team sports, it’s the responsibility of the coaches and club presidents to ensure bullying doesn’t occur.  Emphasising team-building activities and fostering a family-like environment reduces the occurrence of bullying.  Environments which are highly competitive and promote winning at all costs are more likely to foster bullying behaviours.  Alternatively, bullying is less likely to occur, when enjoyment, teamwork, sportsmanship and skill development are given priority. If you witness any bullying on the field, directed toward your child or another.  Firstly, arrange a meeting with the coach.  Explain what you’ve seen and put the responsibility onto the coach to stop the bullying.  If their response is unsatisfactory, escalate the problem to the President of the club. It may be tempting to confront the bully’s parents about the problem.  But, this could make things worse.  Also, it’s difficult for a parent to hear that their child is a bully.  As they may feel under attack or disbelieve you.  Often, it’s best to discuss the situation with the other parents in a neutral environment, with a coach acting as mediator.

Homework

At home, work with your child on strategies to eliminate the bullying.  Promote positive body language, like eye contact.  A child that appears confident in themselves is less likely to be a victim of bullying.  Practice assertive things your child could say if bullying occurs.  Retaliation will only aggravate the bully.  If they appear unfazed by the torment, the bully will eventually give up.  When your child tells you how they successfully diffused harassment at training, or you see them stand up for themselves or another child at a game, make sure to praise them to encourage the positive behaviour. It’s important to help your child, but also to encourage independent thinking and not provide all the answers.  If your child suggests retaliation or escalating the problem, ask them what could happen if they did that.  Help them to see the consequences of actions.  If you show trust in their problem-solving abilities, you will build their resilience and they are more likely to believe in themselves as well.  You can read more tips for raising resilient kids here.

What if your child is the bully?

Children who bully others are at a higher risk of criminal convictions and risky behaviour in adolescence and adulthood.  If your child is the bully, it is important to address the problematic behaviour early.  You may need the help of your child’s coach to do this.  It is not about blaming anyone, but realising that negative behaviours need to be replaced with positive ones.  It may take time, and the behaviour may become worse before it becomes better.  However, once you change one negative behaviour, it’s much easier to eliminate another. Focus on positive behaviours too and reward your child when they display them.  Teach your child empathy and talk to them about how the other child may feel.
